The main rule: alternate the load
Five days is really three and a half: arrival and departure days are half eaten by flights and check-in. So the plan is built not around fitting everything in, but around alternation — a hard day, then an easy one.
Hard days are sea trips and mainland routes: a 6 am start, back by 18:00–19:00, plenty of sun and driving. Easy ones are island sightseeing, a show, the beach, a water park. Two hard days back to back exhaust even seasoned travellers, and the rest of the holiday goes on catching up on sleep.
Second rule: put sea trips early. If the sea closes for weather you still have days in hand to reschedule. Land routes run in almost any conditions and move easily.
Day 1. Arrival and adjusting
After a long flight the body is not ready for a 6 am start the next morning. So day one is acclimatisation: the beach near your hotel, dinner, an early night.
If you land in the morning but check-in is at 14:00, half a day at Nai Yang beach or Splash Jungle water park fills the gap — both are ten minutes from the airport. Luggage stays in the vehicle.
Useful on day one: withdraw cash (card terminals are not everywhere), buy a local SIM, and agree tomorrow's pickup time.
Day 2. Sea: Phi Phi or Krabi
The first full day goes to the headline sea route, while energy is high. The classic is Phi Phi: Maya Bay, Pileh Lagoon, snorkelling, lunch on Phi Phi Don. Departure around 07:00, back by 18:00.
For anyone who has done Phi Phi or dislikes crowds, the Krabi islands are the alternative: Hong lagoon, the sandbar between three islands, Poda beach. Noticeably fewer people for the same clear water.
With children under 6 or a tendency to seasickness, James Bond Island makes more sense: the route runs inside a sheltered bay with almost no motion, and the day is two hours shorter.
Day 3. Easy day: island and town
After the sea comes island sightseeing: the Big Buddha, Wat Chalong, Karon viewpoint, the old town with its Sino-Portuguese facades and Promthep Cape at sunset. Air conditioning all day, little walking, and a later start is fine.
In the evening, a show. Simon Cabaret runs an hour and a half if you want something light; Fantasea and Carnival Magic come with dinner if you want scale. Both finish by 21:00–22:00 and do not spoil the next day.
If you prefer active over contemplative, swap this day for ziplining or quad biking — moderate effort, back by lunchtime.
Day 4. Mainland: Cheow Lan or elephants
The second hard day. Cheow Lan Lake is the region's strongest nature route: limestone cliffs rising straight from the water, a boat across the lake, the Khao Sok jungle. Departure at 06:00, back by 19:00.
The calmer alternative is an ethical elephant sanctuary: feeding, mud baths, a jungle walk, with no riding. Half a day, back by lunch, and the rest of the day stays free.
A third option if you are after photographs: Samet Nangshe — the Phang Nga Bay panorama from above, mangrove channels and the airplane beach beside the runway.
Day 5. Rest and departure
Leave the last day free of tours: the beach near your hotel, a massage, a market run for souvenirs. With an evening flight, half a day on Coral Island fits — fifteen minutes from Phuket, back by 13:00.
Important on diving: if it was in your plan, at least 18 hours must pass between the dive and the flight. Scheduling it for the second-to-last day is already cutting it fine.
Allow extra time for the airport transfer: at rush hour the drive from the south of the island takes up to 90 minutes instead of the usual hour.
What it costs
Roughly per person in group format: a sea day from 1,900 THB, island sightseeing from 1,050 THB, Cheow Lan from 2,600 THB, a show from 1,000 THB. The tour portion of a five-day trip comes to about 6,500–8,000 THB per person.
In private format the price is per party, not per head: sightseeing from 8,000 THB for up to 8, land routes from 9,000–12,000 THB, sea trips as a boat charter from 26,000 THB. For a family of four a private day often costs about the same as a group one, but without anyone else's schedule.
